50W, 12V/60V boost converter based on eGaNFET

     EPC Power Conversion Corporation (EPC) has announced the launch of a two-way buck or reverse Boost converter demonstration board (EPC9162). The demo board uses 100 V EPC2052 devices for synchronous converters and EPC2038 devices for synchronous bootstrap FET circuits.

     The EPC9162 is designed as a boost converter with an input voltage of 12 V and an output of 60 V/50 W. However, the board can also be used as a step-down converter with an input voltage of 48 V and an output of 12 V/60 W. eGaN FET's fast switching significantly reduces switching losses, resulting in higher operating efficiency. To make it easy for power supply designers to replicate this design, all relevant design resources for the board, including schemalogs, bill of materials, and Gerber documentation, are available on the EPC website.

     Despite the small size of the eGaN FET, the peak efficiency from 12 V to 60 V/0.85 A was 95.3%, light load efficiency was 86%, and temperature rise was only 40°C.

     "For applications where light-load efficiency is critical, such as LED backlighting for laptops and monitors, the eGaN FET's low switching losses enable efficient and extremely low temperature rise to prevent overheating," said Alex Lidow, CEO of IBP Power Conversion.
