28nm process node integrated circuits have been commercially produced for several years. As this technology matures, the demand for 28nm products is increasing. Despite many advantages, this technology has not become the mainstream technology in the field of security application so far. Infineon Technologies has introduced SLC26P, the first secure IC for high-volume payment applications based on a 28nm process node that can cope with future demand.
"Infineon is the first company to use 28nm process nodes for smart card ics," said Ioannis Kabitoglou, head of Infineon Technologies' Digital Security and Identity product line. The move also highlights Infineon's long-term commitment to the security IC market. SLC26P is the first smart card IC product that will be manufactured using 28nm technology. Infineon plans to rapidly ramp up production in the first half of 2023 to meet the continued high market demand for cutting-edge security solutions and mitigate the negative impact of semiconductor shortages on the security IC segment."
Infineon has developed secure IC products for 28nm process nodes with long-time partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., LTD. Mature technologies such as 90nm, 65nm and 40nm have long struggled to meet the strong demand of the security application market due to capacity problems. Silicon fabs are continually expanding new capacity to address the problem. Infineon's use of the 28nm process node in the security IC sector brings a more flexible choice to the market, as well as a stronger performance and more energy efficient products for the sector. The 28nm process node product family will be used in the coming years for state-of-the-art smart card and embedded secure IC applications, including the payment and transport markets, as well as authentication solutions.
Infineon's SLC26P is the first 28nm security controller optimized for payment applications. The product is expected to receive EMVCo certification in December 2022. SLC26P brings unmatched performance to the payments industry while meeting high security standards. SLC26P uses an advanced Arm® v8-M architecture optimized for deep embedded systems and built for low latency processing.
