NXP Semiconductor announced the launch of a new development platform that supports Matter™ to help simplify and accelerate the development of Matter devices for smart homes and buildings. With the new Matter development platform, designers can easily leverage NXP's broad portfolio of processing, connectivity and security solutions to develop a wide range of iot devices, from battery-powered devices such as sensors and drives to sophisticated gateways with the capabilities of Thread boundary routers and Matter controllers.
With the recent launch of the Matter certification scheme and the approval of the Matter standard, the smart home is on the cusp of rapid development. The Matter standard was developed by the Connected Standards Consortium (CSA), a group of semiconductor industry leaders including NXP. The introduction of the standard heralds a new era of interoperability in the Internet of Things, with fewer restrictions on how devices can communicate with each other. This will bring greater flexibility to end users of smart homes and smart buildings, allowing them to choose between different brands of smart homes and control across multiple platforms and ecosystems without worrying about compatibility.
"For the first time ever, smart home products from major consumer electronics manufacturers are interoperable across multiple devices, vendors, and ecosystems on the back of Matter," said Bill Curtis, analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy for the residential Internet of Things and Edge processing. Matter not only removes barriers to large-scale deployment of the Internet of Things, but also opens up new opportunities for product innovation. NXP's Matter-enabled security development platform allows product teams to quickly develop value-added features without wasting time on other platform software without differentiation."
"We want the smart home to more accurately predict our daily lives and needs and enable an automated world," said Rafael Sotomayor, executive vice president and general manager of NXP Semiconductors' Connectivity and Security Edge Processing group. The interoperability provided by Matter is key to realizing this vision. The Matter-enabled platform seamlessly integrates all of the underlying technologies developers need to simplify and accelerate the development of a variety of Matter devices, further enabling a truly smart home."
