Allegro Expands Portfolio of Coreless Current Sensors for Applications such as Electric Vehicles and Industrial

Allegro MicroSystems announced the launch of a new core-less Hall effect current sensor, the ACS37610, ideal for demanding automotive and industrial systems with increased accuracy and sensitivity, as well as advanced fault detection capabilities and user programmability

     Allegro MicroSystems announces a new coreless Hall-effect current sensor, the ACS37610, ideal for demanding systems such as automotive and industrial, offering improved accuracy and sensitivity, advanced fault detection, and user Programmability. Together with the ACS37612, the new current sensor ACS37610 is the industry's first family of true coreless Hall sensing solutions capable of measuring currents from 100A to over 4000A flowing through bus bars or PCB traces with a typical accuracy of 1% without requiring External magnetic collector or U-shaped magnetic shield. These innovative solutions enable system designers to increase efficiency and power density while reducing system complexity, BOM cost, footprint and weight.


     "Allegro has been a leading innovator in current sensing solutions for over 20 years and pioneered coreless differential Hall-effect current sensing technology," said Shaun Milano, Director of Current Sensors at Allegro. "Our new ACS37610 enables Customers can accurately measure currents of hundreds or thousands of amps in a very cost-effective and simple way. Allegro's Hall-based differential sensors offer excellent immunity to stray fields without the need for shielding required by competing solutions that reduce Slow response speed and increase nonlinear errors in the system."

 

     The ACS37610 is the best choice for applications such as electric vehicle high voltage traction motor inverters, 48V/12V auxiliary inverters, heterogeneous redundant battery monitoring, overcurrent detection, smart insurance, power distribution units (PDUs) and power supplies. The 250kHz bandwidth, dedicated overcurrent and thermal fault pins, and full built-in diagnostics make the ACS37610 ideal for safety-critical applications.

 

     The ACS37610 uses advanced differential sensing technology, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by a factor of 2.5 and reduces noise by a factor of 2 compared to the ACS37612. Lower noise provides the high resolution required for precise torque control, while the 4x higher sensitivity range of the ACS37610 enables flexible busbar and PCB design.

 

     As an optional measure, shallow groove design of bus bars or PCB copper traces can further improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the system. The ACS37610 has a larger 2.5mm Hall element pitch (1.8mm for the ACS37612) to accommodate wider shallow grooves, resulting in virtually no thermal degradation and hot spots. The ACS37610 can be mounted in a horizontal or vertical orientation relative to a busbar, allowing for a very high degree of flexibility in mechanical assembly.

 

     The ACS37610 current sensor is now available in a low profile, lead-free 8-pin surface-mount TSSOP package, an ultra-compact package ideal for space-constrained applications, while enabling simple, cost-effective surface mounting. To help developers speed up their designs, Allegro also offers evaluation kits and reference tools for PCB or busbar current sensing.
