
Allegro MicroSystems announced the addition of two new Hall-effect sensor product families, the APS11450 and APS12450, to its expanding portfolio of system solutions requiring safety features, with the APS11450 being a single-pole switching IC portfolio and the APS12450 being a bipolar latch family. These new products are compatible with existing three-wire Hall-effect switches and latch-on IC pins for easy replacement upgrades and are ISO 26262:2011 compliant with ASIL-B level functionality (to be evaluated).
The newly released magnetic sensor has an integrated self-test function that always keeps running in the background while the system is working, thus requiring very short fault detection times. The process is automatic, the time of test execution is very fast (typical value 25μs), and it can be completely transparent to the host system, even for the latches used in high-speed motors and encoders. The unique voltage mode output sends the status of the sensor, including the safety state, while maintaining backward compatibility with logic level interfaces, application circuits, wiring, and firmware.
Jim Judkins, product Line Director for Digital Position Sensor ics at Allegro, explains, "Our challenge is to bring existing and future ADAS systems to the required level of safety while being backward compatible with the billions of Hall switches and latches we already ship. As a result, Allegro has developed the fastest diagnostic technology available for magnetic switches and latches, as well as logic-compatible outputs that transmit sensor status and support open/short circuit detection of wiring."
The APS11450 and APS12450 are very versatile and designed to improve the performance of a wide range of automotive applications and intelligent motion systems, ideal for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and encoders for window lifts, seat motors, seat belt tensioners and closure systems. These ics are also suitable for off-road vehicles, heavy equipment, human-machine interface (HMI) and dump truck (Angle of inclination) sensors, as well as applications such as kickstands and driver controls in two-wheeled vehicles.
The APS11450 and APS12450, which meet the requirements of AEC-Q100 and above, are hardware safety devices developed according to the ISO26262 standard and capable of supporting ASIL-B functions (to be evaluated), so they are perfectly suitable for automotive safety systems, and the integrated safety features are also beneficial for other safety systems. With the APS11450/12450 family of devices, ASIL-B (or higher) ratings can be achieved without redundant sensors, enabling smaller, lower power and cost system designs.
The APS11450/12450 series devices are available in two packages with magnetic properties that closely match the original Hall sensors, making them very flexible and easy to design. These monolithic ics operate at voltages from 3.3 to 24V, withstand junction temperatures up to 175 ° C, and can withstand input voltages up to +35V, reverse batteries (-30V), output short circuits, load-dump, and other overvoltage transients. Allegro's miniature LH is packaged as SOT-23W for surface mount; Model UA is a 3-pin, single-in-line package (SIP) suitable for through-hole installation. Both packages are lead free and the pin frame is 100% mist tin plated.
