Allegro introduces the APS11700/760 family of Micropower Hall-effect switches designed for battery-powered applications in harsh industrial and automotive markets. The automated power management of these ics enables average power current to be as low as 6μA when powered directly from an automotive battery or other unregulated power source.

Allegro introduces the APS11700/760 family of Micropower Hall-effect switches designed for battery-powered applications in harsh industrial and automotive markets. The automated power management of these ics enables average power current to be as low as 6μA when powered directly from an automotive battery or other unregulated power source. The power management of the new products takes place in the background, is transparent to the host system, and can be used to directly upgrade existing Hall effect switches, or replace mechanical microswitches and reed switches.

 

"The APS11700/760's unique reliability and ultra-low power consumption make it possible to reliably replace reed tubes or microswitches, or even power sensitive applications using battery power directly," explains Jim Judkins, product line director for Position Sensor ics at Allegro.

 

These monolithic devices integrate standard Hall or vertical Hall components, small signal amplifiers, chopper stabilizers, Schmidt triggers, automatic power management controllers, and an NMOS output transistor. The APS11700 uses a standard planar Hall-effect sensor, while the APS11760 uses the silicon-based vertical Hall-effect sensor AVHT technology, which is more sensitive to magnetic flux parallel to the IC packaging surface, and the planar sensitivity is comparable to that of commonly used magnetic reed switches.

 

The APS11700/760 device is pre-configured with user-selectable magnetic sensitivity, thresholds, and polarity, and the user can also select active-high or low-level active outputs for easy integration into subsystems. These ics can withstand voltages up to 40V and junction temperatures up to 165 ° C, conforming to AEC-Q100 Grade 0 standards and ISO 26262:2011 ASIL A standards for automotive and other safety systems. In addition, they have internal protection circuits that protect against overvoltage, battery reversals, load-dump, output short circuits, mannequin ESD up to ±11kV, and other EMC conditions.

 

Typical applications of APS1177/760 devices include:

● Open/close/latch sensors for automotive doors, hatch covers, luggage, LCD screens, interior lighting and other applications
● Transmission, pedals and other driver controls/human machine interfaces (HMI)
● Liquid level sensor
● Tilt angles, docking brackets and HMI sensors for 2 - and 3-wheel vehicles
● White goods/other appliances
● Robots, vending machines, fitness equipment, electric blinds/curtains/shading and other intelligent motion control

 

The APS11700/760 device is available in two packages, with the LH package being a SOT-23W, micro, flat package for surface mount applications. UA is a 3-pin, ultra-small single-in-line package (SIP) for through-hole installations. Both packages are lead free and the pin frame is 100% mist tin plated.
