Allegro introduces new revolutionary giant magnetoresistive crankshaft and camshaft sensors for hybrid engine platforms

Allegro MicroSystems, a global leader in sensing technology and power semiconductor solutions for motion control and energy saving systems, announced the introduction of two new and more advanced Giant reluctance (GMR) crankshaft and camshaft sensors, ATS16951 (crankshaft) and ATS16351 (camshaft). These two products are unique in the market and provide manufacturers with a single supplier solution well suited to hybrid vehicle engines

     Allegro MicroSystems announced the launch of two new and more advanced giant magnetoresistive (GMR) crankshaft and camshaft sensors ATS16951 (crankshaft) and ATS16351 (camshaft). These two products are unique in the market and can provide manufacturers with single supplier solutions that are very suitable for hybrid vehicle engines. They can also be extended to two wheel electric vehicles, off-road vehicles and applications requiring extended air gap performance, which can help engine designers reduce system complexity, cost and energy consumption, improve system efficiency, and minimize carbon emissions.

 

     Although the trend of complete electrification in the global automotive market is accelerating, IHS's latest forecast shows that 81% of vehicles will still be equipped with some form of internal combustion engine by 2029, of which the most common models are full and mild hybrid. To meet the transition to a smaller hybrid design, the engine architecture is changing, and sensor accuracy and positioning flexibility will become more important than ever.


     Compared with existing competitive products and traditional solutions, ATS16951 reverse biased GMR crankshaft sensor has 40% higher edge repeatability and lower jitter, which can provide better methods for automobile manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency through higher precision ignition and valve timing systems. ATS16951 also allows for a large air gap, which can simplify the design, expand the design margin and tolerance capability, and facilitate the implementation of a wider range of sensor installation locations.


     With an industry-leading air gap 50% larger than existing products, the ATS16351 True Power On (TPOS) GMR camshaft sensor can also improve design flexibility and anti stray field interference. It can be placed almost anywhere, because some hybrid engines now include four camshaft sensors, which is becoming increasingly important. The narrow space is usually accompanied by high current transient. Engine designers need these camshaft sensors that can work seamlessly in stray fields. The differential GMR architecture of ATS16351 can also provide anti-interference capabilities that traditional or competitive solutions do not have.


     Both sensors are integrated with Allegro's Target Profile Diagnostic function, which can evaluate targets during manufacturing and detect any subtle gear tooth abnormalities before the engine is installed in the vehicle, helping to prevent possible warranty return risks and improve customer satisfaction.
