Ams OSram's ultra-low noise AFE sensor technology helps enhance the ability of wearable devices to monitor vital signs

Ams Osram, a global leader in optical solutions, announced the launch of its ultra-low noise analog Front End (AFE) sensor, the AS7058, which extends the battery life of smartwatches, smart rings and other wearables. It also improves the accuracy and reliability of vital sign measurements obtained from photoplethysmography (PPG) or electrical signals.

     Ams Osram, a global leader in optical solutions, announced the launch of its ultra-low noise analog Front End (AFE) sensor, the AS7058, which extends the battery life of smartwatches, smart rings and other wearables. It also improves the accuracy and reliability of vital sign measurements obtained from photoplethysmography (PPG) or electrical signals.

 

     The ultra-low noise characteristics of the AS7058 result in an extremely high optical signal-to-noise ratio of 120dB. Compared to competing products, the AS7058 offers a significant improvement in PPG measurement performance for parameters such as heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and blood pressure. The AS7058 excelled in optical noise performance thanks to the introduction of several research and development achievements, including the integration of two low-noise 20-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), the adoption of integrated low-noise LED drivers, and the introduction of a new automatic ambient light offset correction technology.

 

     The AS7058's high signal-to-noise ratio also helps the wearable device to keep the signal intact while allowing the wearable device to operate the LED with lower current, effectively reducing power consumption. Florian Lex, product marketing manager at AMS OSram, said: "If the health monitoring results of smartwatches can be upgraded from approximate indicators reflecting health status factors to medically actible data, the value of the product to the consumer will be greatly increased." "Reducing the optical noise base of PPG measurements enables better quality vital signs data for smartwatches, smart rings and other wearables, which is the goal of the AS7058."
