Ams announced the launch of a combined ambient light (ALS) and proximity sensor, which can provide accurate color, illumination measurement and reliable proximity detection, showing excellent performance under the high-speed and high-definition OLED display of new smart phones.
The new TCS3720 is the next generation "OLED under screen" sensor of Ames Osram, which is suitable for smart phone displays with high refresh rate, high-frequency PWM brightness control and low transmittance. These display characteristics make the operating conditions of the ambient light/proximity sensor under the OLED screen extremely challenging: high sampling speed shortens the time interval between devices measuring optical signals, while low transmittance will weaken the signals reaching the sensor photodiode.
Compared with previous generations of OLED sensors, Ames Osram's innovative technology in the TCS3720 has significantly improved the sensitivity and dynamic range. The sensitivity of the TCS3720 is more than five times that of the first generation TCS3701, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is three times higher. The TCS3720 is packaged in 3.34mm x 1.36mm x 0.6mm 12 pin OLGA.
Ams also introduced an independent VSYNC timing synchronization function for ALS and proximity sensing functions to improve the synchronous alignment measurement of measurement timing and brightness driving timing. With these innovative technologies, even if the device works under the OLED screen with faster speed and darker light, accurate measurement performance can be achieved. In typical applications, TCS3720 can reliably support a proximity sensing range of up to 5cm, provide color and illumination measurement, and finely optimize the brightness and color balance of mobile phone displays.
