Ams Osram introduced high-power and low-power UV-C LED, which can effectively inactivate SARS CoV-2

     Test results for the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 virus. The COVID-19 pandemic is ravaging many parts of the world and continues to affect People's Daily lives. While various measures are being taken to contain the epidemic, UV-C light-based disinfection solutions are becoming increasingly popular. Previously used mercury vapor lamps were often bulky and limited in target wavelength. Today, LED technology has made significant progress, opening the door to new applications. A study conducted at the University of Padua on the effectiveness of Emais Osram UV-C leds has confirmed that they can play a positive role in the fight against COVID-19.

 

     It has been shown that high intensity UV-C LED radiation can rapidly inactivate SARS-CoV-2 virus. In practical applications, such as upper-layer air treatment or secondary air treatment devices, they need to be applied over multiple cycles to achieve the amount of radiation needed to eliminate the virus. This means that the required amount of radiation can be achieved by extending the exposure time at a lower intensity. To match the actual situation, Amais Osram and the University of Padua conducted tests that focused on evaluating the effects of different irradiance levels to further demonstrate that the system design using UV-C leds is effective. The experiment assessed not only the amount of radiation required to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 virus, but also its consistency at different irradiance levels, from low to high (coefficient over 100). Unlike other tests, which typically focus on the highest or fastest rate of virus reduction, the Emais Osram and Padua tests can easily increase the rate by increasing the irradiance and extending the duration of the experiment.

 

     Experiments conducted at the Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Padua, have confirmed that the Oslon UV 3636 LED can effectively reduce the amount of SARS-CoV-2 virus by providing UV-C irradiation. This further confirms reports in recent publications 1) that this mechanism is not affected by variants of the pathogen and could therefore provide a timeless treatment against COVID-19 and the next possible outbreak.

 

     In the experiments, the apparatus was equipped with two different power levels of Oslon UV 3636 (4 and 42 mW) placed at a distance of 300 mm from the pathogen. All leds have a wavelength of 275 nm. In this experiment, the uniform irradiance of the probe was achieved through a mixing chamber, and the irradiance was determined considering all reflections. At low intensity levels, log3 or a reduction of up to 99.9 percent of the virus would require 2.7 mJ/cm², and log4 or a reduction of up to 99.99 percent would require 3.6 mJ/cm².
