Ams has launched a new VCSEL 3D gesture recognition product, which brings AR/VR interactive experience to a new level

     Ams the world's leading optical solutions provider, has expanded its 3D sensing portfolio with a new VCSEL (Vertical Cavity surface-emitting laser) module, Bidos P2433Q. Applications based on 3D-sensing technologies, such as machine vision, facial recognition, augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR), will greatly benefit from components such as Emais Osram's Bidos P2433 Q, which enables a variety of gestures to be captured more reliably and accurately. Its compact package also allows customers some flexibility in design.

     For AR/VR devices and other 3D applications, a compact and lightweight design is crucial because it maximizes the user experience. In the 3D sensing market, VCSEL is favored for its superior beam quality, cost efficiency, and simple design. Simon Gubser, Product Manager, Amais Osram, said: "Our expanded Bidos product range provides the smallest VCSEL package available in the market for 3D applications with defined power and emission angles. By integrating matching emitters and sensors into a compact module, the packaging difficulty for customers is greatly reduced."

     The Bidos P2433Q comes in four different versions, containing two different emission angles and two output powers. The VCSEL-based modules, measuring 3.3 mm x 2.4 mm, are suitable for 3D sensing applications with time-of-flight (ToF) measurements and meet the need for uniform scene illumination. Due to the wavelength of 940 nm, all modules are free of red exposure, which is seen by the human eye as an interfering flicker.

     The two higher-power modules (6.5 watts) feature a double-junction VCSEL for superior performance and 45% efficiency. In addition, a special sensor monitoring function is integrated in the module to protect the eyes - once a change in light incidence is detected (for example, if the optical element is damaged), the current supply to the VCSEL will be immediately interrupted.
