The new product achieves great results at a low system cost and is the first of its kind in the industry, enabling contactless operation and inherent suppression of stray magnetic fields, providing a safe, reliable and durable sensing platform for a new generation of auxiliary motors in the car, supporting functional drivetrains and pumps such as electric power steering and actuators.

 

Safer, more accurate position sensing

The differential sensing structure output suppresses the interference of stray magnetic fields generated by high-voltage cables and other components in the vehicle. The non-contact operating mode of the magnetic sensor also protects it from degradation caused by dust, dirt, grease, moisture and other contaminants.

 

These features enable manufacturers to eliminate the competing sensor systems required for expensive and bulky shielding while maintaining safe operation. The AS5116 comes with a dedicated safety manual to support customers' ISO 26262 compliance efforts and is AEC-Q100 rated for automotive applications.

 

The AS5116's output features an inherent nonlinearity of only 1° (maximum) over a full 360° rotation speed of up to 30,00rpm. With an output noise of 2.47 MVRMS at an operating voltage of 5V, these characteristics enable the AS51 16 to produce an accurate measurement output, thus laying the foundation for efficient motor commutation. By enabling automakers to maximize torque and implement more efficient motor designs, the AS5116 will play a role in greening the road vehicles of the future, improving fuel efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions.

 

The AS5116 comes in an 8-pin SOIC package with a package size of 4.9mmx6.0mm, making it easier to integrate into automotive system board layouts than earlier ams position sensors.

 

Alexander Rensink, product line manager for position sensors at ams, said: "The electrification of vehicle functions is one of the most effective ways for automakers to improve system efficiency and reduce fuel consumption, while meeting consumer demand for more and better driving, safety and comfort features in their vehicles. By building a new generation of electric motors around the AS5116, automakers can further improve efficiency while saving space and costs."
