Bourns, a global leader in the manufacture of electronic components for power, protection and sensing solutions, has announced the expansion of Multifuse Polymer PTC (PPTC) restorable fuses with a higher power rating model, the MF-ASML/X series. The Bourns MF-ASML075/6 has a maximum 0.75A (Ihold) rating and is designed to provide developers with more overcurrent/overheat protection options in the ultra-compact 0402 package for space-constrained applications.
In addition to the higher holding current and smaller plate area, the new model features several key improvements, including increased voltage rating (Vmax) and enhanced resistance stability. These enhancements are specifically designed to meet a variety of applications, primarily optimized protection solutions for low-voltage DC ports commonly found in consumer products such as wearables, toys and gaming applications.
The latest addition to the Multifuse PPTC recoverable fuse family, the MF-ASML075/6 model is also based on Bourns' innovative freeXpansion technology. The technology was developed 14 years ago to enhance the performance of fuses with the ability to handle higher currents and voltages, improve their resistive stability and achieve smaller package sizes. To enhance the reliability and longevity of all Multifuse PPTC recoverable fuses, including the MF-ASML/X model series, we apply a nickel plating free gold immersion (ENIG) coating to their SMD terminals. ENIG coatings, which use a thin, uniform layer of metal overlaid on a layer of nickel, have been shown to have excellent corrosion resistance and excellent electrical conductivity. In contrast, conventional nickel-tin (Ni/Sn) coatings can be prone to problems such as whiskiness, oxidation and corrosion, which can lead to short circuits, poor soldering and deterioration of electronic circuits.
The Bourns MF-ASML/X model family also features a unique tungsten carbide (WC) material, which has a low resistance to oxidation, even in humid environments. In addition, low resistance is of great value as it helps to improve power efficiency, while oxidation resistance helps to achieve higher levels of quality and reliability.
