CGD and Qorvo collaborate to develop improved motor control solutions

Cambridge GaN Devices (CGD) and Qorvo have partnered to integrate premier motor control and power efficiency technologies in the PAC5556A + ICeGaN evaluation kit (EVK). This partnership integrates Qorvo’s high-performance BLDC/PMSM motor controller/driver with CGD’s user-friendly ICeGaN ICs on a board that markedly enhances motor control applications.

     Cambridge GaN Devices (CGD) and Qorvo have partnered to integrate premier motor control and power efficiency technologies in the PAC5556A + ICeGaN evaluation kit (EVK). This partnership integrates Qorvo’s high-performance BLDC/PMSM motor controller/driver with CGD’s user-friendly ICeGaN ICs on a board that markedly enhances motor control applications.

 

     CGD asserts that by integrating premier technologies from two technologically robust firms in this EVK, they facilitate the creation of compact, energy-efficient systems with elevated power density. In contrast to other GaN technologies, ICeGaN seamlessly integrates with Qorvo’s PAC5556A motor control IC, ensuring optimal performance in BLDC and PMSM applications.

 

     According to Qorvo, wide-bandgap semiconductors such as GaN and SiC are used in motor control applications due to their superior power density and efficiency benefits. CGD’s ICeGaN technology provides user-friendliness and dependability—two essential elements for motor control and drive engineers. Customers are exhibiting enthusiasm upon experiencing the capabilities of GaN in conjunction with our fully integrated PAC5556A 600V BLDC motor control system.

 

     Utilizing CGD's state-of-the-art P2 ICs, the PAC5556AEVK2 evaluation kit, with 240 mΩ ICeGaN, attains a peak performance of 400W without a heatsink, whereas the PAC5556AEVK3, equipped with 55 mΩ ICeGaN, reaches 800W peak with minimal airflow cooling. The efficiency improvements of ICeGaN lead to diminished power loss, enhanced power availability, and lower heat dissipation, facilitating the development of more compact and dependable systems. ICeGaN simplifies gate driver design and reduces BOM costs by integrating crucial current sense and Miller clamp components. This renders the solution straightforward to execute, cost-effective, and high-performing.
