CSR introduces the ARM mbed operating system connectivity solution

     CSR has released product details of several upcoming connectivity solutions for the new ARM mbed operating system (OS) that will make it easier and faster for developers to develop complete Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

     CSR will provide IoT community developers with two mbed expansion boards, one with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity based on CSR6030™ and CSR8311™, and the other with Bluetooth Smart connectivity based on CSR1010™, which will be fully available in early 2015. Designed to work seamlessly with the ARM mbed operating system, available in October 2014, the two expansion boards provide the basic connectivity needed for all IoT devices. With these two ideal connectivity solutions that are easy to deploy, developers can further optimize the technology to achieve the best performance for all devices.

     "The mbed operating system integrates the ARM processing engine and CSR connectivity solutions to significantly reduce the pressure on developers to bring connected products to market cost-effectively, which is critical in the rapidly changing and highly competitive consumer iot market," said Anthony Murray, senior vice president, CSR Business Unit.

     "The stacked platform enables functional modules to be easily reused across a variety of hardware, enabling mbed OS to extend ARM's support for the development community and further bring IoT devices to market."

     Krisztian Flautner, General Manager of ARM's iot business, said: "To enable iot applications to operate at scale, we need to provide developers with a wide range of interoperability hardware and software solutions to help them seamlessly move from proof-of-concept to prototyping to mass production. CSR provides connectivity and location solutions that accelerate the development process and is a core partner in helping ARM deploy the mbed iot device platform. The CSR component solution will enable the 70,000 mbed ecosystem developers to develop iot applications and commercial-scale production."

     CSR joined the ARM mbed project as a component partner in February 2014 and is committed to providing developers with a comprehensive range of development tools to help them bring their products to market. To add location and connectivity capabilities, CSR will also provide mbed developers with GPS development boards based on the proven SiRFStarV platform. The positioning board, including source code and reference design resources, will be available for purchase through CSR distributors by the end of the year.
