Cypress launches USB-C controllers for the massive PC market segment

     Cypress Semiconductor Corporation announced the availability of its latest USB-C controller, the ACG1F. Designed for mainstream and entry-level laptops and desktop PCS, the ACG1F is a low-cost single-port USB-C controller for systems that need to convert a traditional USB Type-A port to a USB Type-C port.

     The ACG1F integrates VBUS load switches for power and fault protection, providing a more reliable solution to accelerate the use of USB-C in PCS. The ACG1F uses a 32-bit Arm® Cortex® -M0 processor with 16-KB flash memory and provides USB-C programming capability. In addition, ACG1F supports the latest version of Microsoft's USB Type-C Connector System Software Interface (UCSI) drivers and extensions, providing broader support for customers developing USB-C solutions.

     The USB-C connectivity standard is being widely adopted by the world's leading PC manufacturers and peripheral and accessory manufacturers. Usb-c offers users several advantages, including support for positive and negative plugging and support for a variety of standards, including USB 3.1 (twice the data rate of USB 3.0 and up to 10Gbps), Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, and HDMI.

     Linn Huang, vice president of Devices and Displays at IDC, said: "IDC expects USB-C to continue its strong growth momentum and is expected to be one of the fastest growing personal computer technologies in the coming years as manufacturers and consumers adopt it widely. Fast, versatile, robust, and you'll never have to worry about which side should be up when plugging in, USB-C is a game-changing technology that will eventually be everywhere. By 2022, more than 80 percent of laptops will have USB-C ports, and 25 percent of laptops will only have USB-C ports instead of traditional Type-A ports."
