Cypress's USB Power Transfer controller for USB Type-C cables is USB-IF certified

     Cypress Semiconductor Corporation announced that its first - and second-generation USB Power Transfer controllers have passed the USB Designers Forum (USB-IF) certification test process with USB Power Transfer (PD)E-Marker capability. Product test ids for EZ-PD CCG1 (CYPD1103) and EZ-PD CCG2 (CYPD2103) controllers are 1095059 and 1095054, respectively.

     E-Marker chips are used in USB power transfer cables, including USB Type-C™, to report cable properties such as current carrying capacity, supported protocols, and vendor identity. The USB Type-C standard's thin industrial design, easy-to-use connectors, cables capable of transmitting data over multiple protocols, and the ability to deliver up to 100 watts of power quickly gained support from top PC vendors. The plug height of the Type-C standard connector is only 2.4mm, significantly less than the existing 4.5mm USB Type-A standard connector. And it also allows USB signals to be transmitted over the same connector, as well as PCIe or display port signals.

     The EZ-PD CCG1 USB Type-C port controller is based on Cypress's PSoC 4 programmable system-on-chip architecture. This architecture enabled Cypress to quickly integrate the transceivers needed for Type-C communications, quickly launching products in a matter of weeks and becoming a pioneer in the Type-C port controller market. The controller has good design flexibility and can be used in USB Type-C applications such as cables, power adapters, notebooks, transceivers and displays.

     The programmable EZ-PD CCG2 controller is optimized for USB Type-C cable connectors with a thickness of 2.4 mm and supports all USB Type-C downlink port (DFP), uplink port (UFP) or dual role port (DRP) applications. The EZ-PD CCG2 is packaged in a 3.3 mm2 wafer-scale chip-size package (WLCSP), 14-pin DFN or 24-pin QFN. The EZ-PD CCG2 is the first programmable solution that fully integrates the USB Type-C transceiver, system-level ESD protection and termination resistance required for all USB Type-C applications.
