Diodes introduces the PI3A6386 USB Type-C Multimedia port switcher

     Diodes introduces the PI3A6386 USB Type-C multimedia port switter, designed to allow manufacturers to continue supporting older data and analog peripherals through the USB Type-C port. Because phones and tablets use USB Type-C ports, manufacturers are also removing other ports, such as USB 2.0 and 3.5mm audio jacks. The PI3A6386 port switcher allows older data and audio signals to be transmitted over a USB Type-C port, allowing consumers to continue using their existing peripheral devices. The PI3A6386 is available in a TQFN-24 package.

     The performance of the PI3A6386 port switcher ensures a high level of audio quality without signal distortion or noise. This includes autonomous microphone and ground wire switching, while CMOS designs provide on-resistance of only 1Ω to the audio switching transistor. Low crosstalk between data and audio channels was also a priority when the PI3A6386 was designed, and crosstalk suppression of up to -85dB at 30kHz makes the PI3A6386 a success in this regard.

     Other design features include programmable slow start and slow stop times, which eliminate the pop and click noise that occurs when the audio signal is coupled in DC, thereby providing an authentic audio experience. The PI3A6386 operates at supply currents between 1.7V and 5.5V, making it suitable for use with portable devices. The switcher can also handle ±3V signals, further improving dynamic range and audio quality.

     The PI3A6386 supports USB 2.0 high speed and full speed signals, as well as USB Type-C audio accessory mode. The -110dB THD is maintained at 20Hz to 20kHz (signal conversion for 2.0V RMS to 32Ω load). Separate ground switches can also be used for audio and data signals to further reduce crosstalk.
