Empower introduces the EP70xx family of leading power management ics

     With this revolutionary product platform EP70xx, Empower has been able to achieve full integration of three-output DC/DC power supplies in a single 5mm x 5mm micro package without any external components, resulting in a 10x increase in current density and a 3x increase in transient accuracy. Dynamic voltage scaling 1000 times ahead of major competitors.

     Empower Semiconductor's patented digital configurable hardware platform enables designers to simplify the adoption of DC/DC converters. With a single integrated product, no need to use external components, loose programmability, and a wide range of current and output configurations, power designers can use the EP70xx on almost any design and platform. Because multiple complete power supplies are integrated in a single IC package, common issues such as component changes and procurement, synchronization, and stability can be eliminated or significantly mitigated.

 

     Trey Roessig, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Engineering at Empower Semiconductor, explains, "Empower Semiconductor's vision is not only to deliver breakthrough performance and density, but also to make the design process simpler and more confident. We can easily assemble the EP70xx onto the PCB without additional discrete components, using the provided graphical user interface (GUI) to select Settings and then load the device via the I3C/I2C port. Just as you have three-way outputs that are regulated at high current, they can be adjusted with large bandwidth and high efficiency. The EP70xx requires no input and output filter design, no feedback resistors, no loop compensation design, and no component changes."

 

     Thanks to the unique architecture of the EP70xx series, its peak efficiency is up to 91%, with an almost flat efficiency curve in the output current range of up to 10A. These devices offer a 1,000-fold increase in dynamic voltage scaling compared to competing products, enabling fast, lossless processor state changes that can save 30 percent or more processor power.

 

     The EP70xx series is marketed in eight initial products: four with three-way outputs, two with two-way outputs, and two with single-way outputs. The output current can be 1 to 10A, in a 5x5mm or 4x4mm package with a height of 0.75mm, which is 3 to 5 times thinner than traditional integrated power modules and inductors. These products achieve such high density and simplicity that they can be offered as bumped dies that can be packaged with digital ics to fully integrate power management into the SoC.
