
Renesas Electronics, the world's leading provider of semiconductor solutions, has announced that the ZMOD4410 gas sensor is used as a core component of the Safera Sense smart cooking sensing solution. The ZMOD4410 sensor helps Safera Sense determine if the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in a user's kitchen air is at unhealthy levels.
Safera selected the Renesas ZMOD4410 gas sensor based on its superior accuracy, high reliability and low power consumption characteristics, which are ideal for smart cooking applications. In addition to monitoring VOCs and CO2, Safera Sense also measures humidity levels and the concentration of airborne particles that are easily inhaled and absorbed by the lungs. Safera Sense is placed above the stove and alerts users to poor indoor air quality (IAQ) conditions by sending an alert to the smartphone and lighting a warning light on the device.
Debra Deininger, Director of Industrial Sensing Products at Renesas Electronics, said: "Cooking produces large amounts of VOCs, CO2, moisture and suspended particulates, which are the main cause of poor indoor air quality in the kitchen and throughout the home. With our ZMOD4410 gas sensor, the Safera Sense smart cooking sensor can warn users of poor air quality conditions, at which point the user can simply open a window or start the range hood to improve air quality."

The ZMOD4410 combines programmability, excellent stability, and high sensitivity to VOC measurement, making it an excellent solution for a wide range of IAQ applications, including smart thermostats, air purifiers, smart HVAC devices, and other smart home devices. The ZMOD4410 is made from proven metal oxide (MOx) materials, and each sensor is tested for electrical and chemical characteristics to ensure batch to batch consistency, which is a very important advantage for manufacturers with long production cycles. The ZMOD4410 is also highly resistant to siloxanes, providing excellent reliability in demanding application environments.
