High-speed infrared transmitter from Vishay

     Vishay Intertechnology has announced the launch of a new family of 2 mm x 1.25 mm x 0.8 mm 0805 surface mount High Speed infrared (IR) transmitters -VSMY5850X01, VSMY5890X01 and VSMY5940X01, This family of devices is the smallest package in the industry with side light baffles, expanding its optoelectronics portfolio. Vishay Semiconductors VSMY5850X01 (850 nm), VSMY5890X01 (890 nm) and VSMY5940X01 (940 nm) devices use SurfLight surface emitter chip technology, and the irradiation intensity is 30% higher than the previous generation of devices. Operating temperature range -40 C to +110 C.

     Traditional PCB packages use a fully transparent epoxy resin embedded transmitter chip, resulting in the side light to create halos in the camera image. The side walls of the infrared transmitter released today are opaque, preventing excess side-irradiated light and eliminating the need for external shielding, such as rubber rings, thus simplifying the design and making it ideal for position tracking in virtual or augmented reality applications.

     Unlike standard infrared emitters that emit omnidirectional light, the SurfLight VSMY5850X01, VSMY5890X01 and VSMY5940X01 emit almost all of their light and power from the top of the chip. Because most of the light is concentrated on the surface, infrared emitters can irradiate up to 13 mW/sr, making them suitable for proximity sensors, optical switches and small light barriers. The half-intensity Angle of the device brightness is ± 60°, the switching speed is only 7 ns, and the forward voltage is low to 1.6V at 100 mA.

     The VSMY5850X01, VSMY5890X01 and VSMY5940X01 comply with the stringent AEC-Q101 standard for automotive applications with a storage life of 168 hours and a humidity sensitivity level of J-STD-020 Level 3. The device supports lead-free (Pb) reflow soldering process, complies with RoHS and Vishay green standards, and is halogen-free.
