High voltage MCU with USB-C PD and up and down voltage charging controller

     USB-C has been widely adopted by the consumer electronics industry as the connector of choice and is expected to replace most traditional power adapters up to 240 W. With the global transition to USB-C-based DC power, fast charging protocols are becoming more and more popular, further improving power functionality and user experience. To meet the demand created by this trend, Infineon introduces EZ-PD™ PMG1-B1, which further complements the EZ-PD PMG1 family of high-voltage microcontrollers (MCU) with USB-C Power transmission (PD) capabilities.

     PMG1-B1 PD MCU is a single chip solution that integrates USB-C PD controller, up and down voltage battery charging controller, high voltage protection circuit and microcontroller. The product is aimed primarily at battery-powered applications such as power tools, personal care products, smart appliances and other portable devices.

     "As the market leader in USB-C PD microcontrollers, we are excited to bring the new PMG1-B1 PD MCU to the market," said Ganesh Subramaniam, senior vice president and general manager of Infineon Technologies' Wired Connectivity Solutions product line. The product simplifies USB-C PD integration in battery-powered systems for Oems. "This MCU provides very high integration, enabling USB-C PD connectivity, battery charging, high-voltage protection and MCU functions from a single chip."

     The semiconductor is USB PD 3.1 certified and uses Infineon's market-proven EZ-PDTM stack to ensure it complies with the latest USB-C and PD specifications and is interoperable. It combines a USB-C PD controller, an up-and-down battery charging controller, a 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M0 processor, and a 128KB flash memory MCU, and combines a range of analog and digital peripherals such as timers, UART, SPI, I²C interfaces, and PWM. In addition, PMG1-B1 is integrated with other high voltage circuits, such as Vbus-powered voltage regulators, FET grid drivers and advanced fault protection circuits (including overvoltage, overcurrent protection and VBUS to CC short circuit protection) to ensure robust and reliable operation.

     PMG1-B1 PD MCU supports A wide input voltage range of 4 V to 24 V with a 40 V tolerance and programmable switching frequency (150 to 600 kHz), and can provide up to 100 W (20 V, 5 A) power for USB-C ports. Therefore, it is able to charge 2-string to 5-string batteries in an all-in-one USB-C PD MCU solution. The MCU is highly integrated and can provide customers with a compact single-chip solution while saving costs.

     To support application development that implements the MCU, Infineon also provides developers with the ModusToolbox™ firmware development environment. The development environment can be used with the corresponding board-level support package (BSP) and EZ-PD PMG1 software development tool suite (SDK) without requiring expert device knowledge.
