Honeywell has announced the launch of a thickness detection sensor designed to optimize lithium-ion battery production. The new sensor is mainly used to efficiently measure the true thickness of the electrode plate during coating and rolling in the production of lithium-ion batteries. Accurate thickness measurements are a key indicator for optimizing battery performance.

     For lithium-ion battery manufacturers, the coating and rolling links of the battery production line have demanding process requirements. Ensuring uniform coating on both sides of the substrate is particularly important for electrode wafer production. By precisely measuring the coating thickness, lateral (CD) and longitudinal (MD) coating, as well as subsequent roll quality, can be controlled.

 

     Honeywell has been supplying advanced sensors and controllers to lithium-ion battery manufacturers worldwide for more than 20 years. Its advanced thickness measurement sensor technology has ultra-high resolution as low as 0.5 mm and can be put into use without requiring regulatory approval or increased radiation shielding.

 

     Honeywell's lithium-ion battery thickness measurement sensor uses innovative displacement measurement technology to accurately measure the total thickness of the electrode coating. The measurement accuracy is up to 1 micron, allowing operators to identify and classify defect areas before the pole piece enters the downstream process. Honeywell solutions also provide seamless integration of measurement platforms, advanced controllers, and web-based human machine interfaces (HMI).

 

     Chen Yan, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Process Control China, said: "Honeywell's lithium-ion battery electrode thickness sensor is proven to accurately measure the total thickness of the electrode coating from edge to edge, feeding accurate data back to the control system to help optimize the thickness distribution of the electrode coating, and the sensor's high-precision measurement is essential to improve the consistency of the electrode production quality, reduce waste and increase battery yield." This capability reverses the current disadvantage that electrode defects can only be detected by entering the downstream process, which often leads to high waste, substandard products and low yields."
