Honeywell has announced a High Efficiency Mode (HEM) upgrade of the 131-9B Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for Boeing 737 aircraft. The efficient mode is achieved by the innovative and efficient diffuser and the corresponding software that automatically regulates the air flow of the compressor. The high efficiency mode can save fuel and improve efficiency, is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 1-2% (0.5-0.6 gallons of fuel per ASU per hour is expected to be reduced), and allow the ASU to fly up to 1,500 hours longer on the wing, reducing fuel and maintenance costs.
The auxiliary power unit is a critical component of the aircraft, providing power and air conditioning to ensure passenger comfort while the aircraft is on the ground and providing air to the pilot when he or she is ready to start the main engine. The 131-9B auxiliary power unit is known for its reliability and low maintenance costs throughout its life cycle.
"China's aviation industry is making unremitting efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, and Honeywell is committed to contributing to this process. The high Efficiency model upgrade will help our partners accelerate the low-carbon transition by improving fuel efficiency through technological innovation." Ma Ying, chief technology Officer of Honeywell Aerospace China, said, "An airline with a fleet of 50 Boeing 737s, for example, can save up to $450,000 per year in fuel bills and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1,100 tons (depending on operating conditions)." Actual operational results from a major airline confirmed that the 131-9A auxiliary power unit helped save 2.46% of fuel. In addition, the increased flight time on the wing means fewer repairs, resulting in lower maintenance costs, saving an average of $315,000 per service reduction."
The upgrade applies to all 131-9B auxiliary power unit aircraft, including Boeing 737-600, 737-700, 737-800, 737-900 and 737 MAX models. Starting in the second half of this year, fleet operators equipped with 131-9B auxiliary power units will continue to enjoy the benefits of the efficient mode. Efficient mode upgrades can be made during any scheduled maintenance, and the 131-9B auxiliary power units of newer models (49 series and above) do not require additional downtime to install a new diffuser, enabling in-wing upgrades.
