Infineon’s 2000 V SiC Module selected by Daihen Corporation for high power density grid storage ground power conditioner

Infineon Technologies has been chosen by Daihen Corporation to provide their CoolSiC™ 2000 V modules for use in their advanced unit-type power conditioners designed for grid storage batteries. Grid storage batteries and their associated power conditioners are crucial in promoting the widespread use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power generation, as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

     Infineon Technologies has been chosen by Daihen Corporation to provide their CoolSiC™ 2000 V modules for use in their advanced unit-type power conditioners designed for grid storage batteries. Grid storage batteries and their associated power conditioners are crucial in promoting the widespread use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power generation, as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

 

     There is a growing need for higher voltage storage batteries and power conditioners to improve the efficiency of power generation, storage, and transmission. In addition, the increased implementation of large-scale storage battery systems has presented considerable problems in terms of identifying appropriate sites and reducing construction expenses.

 

     Daihen’s power conditioner for grid storage batteries, introduced in March 2024, is the pioneering product in the industry to successfully establish a connection with storage batteries at a significant DC link voltage of 1500 V. By increasing the voltage, the product can now be compatible with high-capacity storage battery systems, leading to a significant 40 percent decrease in the size of grid storage batteries compared to the traditional product.

 

     The high power density is attained through the utilization of Infineon’s 62 mm CoolSiC MOSFET 2000 V module (FF3MR20KM1H). Infineon’s SiC products provide several attributes that facilitate high voltage, improved thermal dissipation, and high power density. Furthermore, these products incorporate M1H trench technology, which expands the gate drive voltage range and enhances resilience and dependability against gate voltage spikes. Infineon was the first company in the industry to introduce the 2000 V class for a Silicon Carbide (SiC) module. This innovation has played a crucial role in streamlining the configuration of the inverter circuit. In addition, the redesigned 62 mm package has resulted in a significant decrease in the overall size of the system, which has contributed to improved efficiency and performance.

 

     Daihen states that the circuit arrangement of ordinary 1200 V devices had made it difficult to enhance the voltage of power conditioners. Nevertheless, by the implementation of Infineon’s 2000 V SiC modules, they managed to get a streamlined circuit configuration and control design, resulting in a decrease in development resources and the physical space required.

 

     Infineon Technologies Japan expresses satisfaction with the significant contribution of their innovative CoolSiC 2000 V module to the advancement of power conditioners for grid storage batteries, resulting in the industry’s best power density. They believe that Infineon’s SiC technology will effectively meet the requirement for enhanced efficiency in energy storage systems and will significantly help to the expansion of renewable energy.
