Infineon Power Modules new switch capacitor intermediate bus converter

     Flex Power Modules has introduced the BMR310, a non-isolated switched capacitor intermediate bus converter (IBC) that provides high-power density power to data centers, thereby improving board space utilization and freeing up space for other components. Built on Infineon Technologies' proprietary zero-voltage switched Capacitor converter (ZSC) technology, the BMR310 achieves over 98% efficiency at half-load and can deliver up to 875W of power continuously in a compact package. It operates in the input voltage range of 40 V to 60 V and provides a voltage output of 10 V to 15 V at variable ratio.

     For data center and high performance computing (HPC) applications, there is a growing trend to gradually shift supply voltages from 12 V to 48 V to reduce distribution current and power losses. To meet this growing demand, Infineon ZSC offers the highest efficiency and power density for applications that use 48 V to generate intermediate bus voltages. This is achieved through soft switching of capacitive energy transfer and power MOSFETs, thus providing a simple and low-risk route to 48 V from a conventional 12 V system and significantly reducing the total system cost of ownership (TCO).

     The BMR310 is mounted horizontally at a height of 10.3 mm, suitable for systems where space is limited due to large radiators or cold plates. Its dimensions are 58.4mm x 25.0mm x 10.3mm (2.3 x 0.98 x 0.41in3). The current installation option is a pedestal mount, but future new models will offer an open architecture.

     To maximize service life, the BMR310 provides over voltage, under voltage, over current and over temperature protection. Like all Flex Power Modules DC/DC converters, it complies with IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 safety standards.

     If needed, multiple converters can be combined through passive load distribution to provide higher power. The BMR310 is compatible with the Flex Power Designer software tool and the new converter includes a PMBus interface for digital control.
