As cities grow, public transport operators must cope with the challenges of increasing passenger numbers, especially during major events such as football matches and the Olympics. This combination of a growing demand for sustainability and convenience is driving the rapid growth of the e-ticketing and smart transportation markets. This transformation requires open standards that allow transparency and trust in secure, convenient and interoperable ticketing solutions. To address this development challenge, Infineon Technologies has introduced CALYPSO move secure memory, which can be used to create an easy-to-use contactless ticketing solution that meets the underlying Calypso specification, allowing manufacturers to meet the specific requirements of transport operators and authorities without the use of magnetic strips, barcodes and specialized tickets. This is the first of its kind.
"The deployment and implementation of solutions must take into account the numerous specifications developed independently by different companies in the transportation industry," said Tolgahan Yildiz, head of Payment Solutions at Infineon Technologies' Secure Connected Systems Division. However, in order to deploy a highly demanding, convenient and secure e-ticketing infrastructure, the industry needs to adopt open standards, and Infineon is committed to this. Our CALYPSO move secure storage enables our customers to create innovative solutions that will transform all modes of transportation into cleaner, safer and smarter."
Comply with Calypso basic specifications
Calypso Networks Association (CNA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together member companies in the transportation, mobility and services sectors to exchange ideas, experiences and needs. The group's goal is to push for an open system to support seamless alignment of ticketing systems with consumer needs. Calypso technology, managed by CNA, is an established and trusted standard for ticketing and access control technology that has been used in more than 170 cities in 29 countries over the past five years, with more than 100 million transit cards issued. [1] All Calypso technologies seamlessly integrate with existing standards and support global business connectivity.
Infineon's CALYPSO move secure memory is perfect for low cost counting tickets (LUTs). This secure memory is primarily used for public transport-related applications, but can also be used for other potential application scenarios specified by the CNA, such as public transportation, payments, access, and so on.
Paulo Barreto, project manager at CAN Calypso basic, said, "Because travelers' needs, expectations and behaviors are so diverse, it is impossible to solve all problems with a single ticketing solution. So the Calypso standard supports a broad portfolio of products to be able to meet the long-term and temporary needs of all travelers in any configuration, medium or system. We believe that this year will be a key year for the Calypso® basic project to further promote the development of the e-ticketing market."
Excellent security and low operating costs
As part of the Calypso infrastructure, CALYPSO move secure storage uses open standards and is therefore not locked in by suppliers, enabling fair competition and flexible procurement. Out of the box, this secure memory can be used for low-cost paper ticket business while meeting the high security requirements of transportation and access systems. In addition, the solution is compatible with the existing Calypso Automatic Billing (AFC) system, which minimizes the cost of terminal deployment and system upgrades. The memory is certified to the CC (Common Criteria) EAL2+ (Enhanced Basic) security standard, which provides enhanced security and excellent contactless performance for bills with limited life and usage.
