Infineon introduces a new fingerprint sensor IC for identification and authentication in automotive applications

     Fingerprint sensing provides accurate and cost-effective biometrics. Compared to other authentication methods such as using a smartphone or entering a password on the car's user interface, fingerprint sensing is more convenient and easy to use for drivers. Therefore, biometric functions have become a development trend in the automotive industry. To meet this demand, Infineon Technologies AG introduces the new automotive fingerprint sensor IC CYFP10020A00 and CYFP10020S00.

     These two semiconductor devices are ideal for use with Infineon TRAVEO™ T2G series microcontrollers and meet the AEC-Q100 requirements for the automotive industry. Both sensors provide powerful fingerprint recognition and authentication capabilities for in-car personalization and payment authentication, such as charging and parking, as well as identity and fingerprint recognition applications outside the automotive industry. Infineon has jointly developed the Biomatch algorithm software with Precise Biometrics to provide leading fingerprint recognition and authentication solutions.

     The CYFP10020A00 sensor operates from -40 to +85 °C and the CYFP10020S00 operates from -40 to +105 °C. The precision capacitive circuitry of both sensors accurately captures the ridges and valleys of the user's fingerprint and detects finger touch and lift away. Users can choose to use them to track finger movements or to act as a small trackpad for scrolling and selecting menus.

     Both devices can be optimized for different types of coatings and borders. With this flexibility, customers are able to customize the look and feel of the entire module to meet their design goals to a greater extent. Both sensors come in an 8.9 x 9.3mm BGA package with an 8 x 8 mm sensing area and a choice of 1.8 to 5.5V power supply. The fingerprint data is encrypted via an on-chip AES hardware block and output to the host MCU (e.g. TRAVEO™ T2G microcontroller) via an SPI interface.
