
Social distancing regulations introduced by governments around the world in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 have created an urgent need for solutions to help people maintain safe social distancing in public places. To this end, Infineon Technologies has spent nearly three months developing a solution that counts the number of people entering and leaving a building or room while ensuring safe social distancing.
This intelligent pedestrian statistics solution uses a miniaturized, standalone radar motherboard (250 mm x 150 mm) to accurately calculate foot traffic anonymously through a single 60 GHz radar sensor and integrated software. It is also equipped with a flow indicator system to indicate whether people at the entrance can enter the premises.
Andreas Urschitz, President of Infineon Technologies' Power and Sensing Systems division, said: "Our goal is to quickly create an effective solution that will allow everyone to move safely in public places, offices, airports or restaurants in accordance with the regulations of the new normal. Our intelligent pedestrian statistics solution is a closed system that avoids overcrowding in public Spaces on the one hand and keeps businesses operating on the other. Most importantly, the solution uses radar technology to protect personal information and privacy. The system only counts passenger traffic, it doesn't identify people."
The global demand for such solutions is expected to reach 90 million units. Using XENSIV™ 60 GHz radar sensors, Infineon's intelligent people count solution works in contactless operation and can be easily installed on the sides or ceilings of building entrances and exits. The solution is suitable for a variety of building types, such as public buildings, retail convenience stores, restaurants, schools, or internal corporate dining areas, offices and other Spaces. In addition, Infineon has begun to develop the next generation of solutions that will incorporate even more features.
