Battery powered appliances are one of the fastest growing market segments in the industry. Such applications require energy-saving, robust and cost-effective battery charging solutions. In order to meet this demand, Infineon Technology has introduced ICC80QSG single-stage pulse width modulation (PWM) controller suitable for flyback topology, which further expands the product line-up of Infineon's AC-DC controller IC. This IC is specially tailored for battery charging applications, and is compatible with CoolMOS ™ P7 super junction (SJ) MOSFET is used together to achieve a scalable power design with output power up to 130 W. This product is also suitable for adapter, printer, PC, TV, monitor, set-top box, audio amplifier and other applications.
The ICC80QSG battery charging IC supports a quasi resonant mode multi-trough switch (QRMn). In addition to the quasi resonant mode (QRM), it can also prevent the entry of continuous on-off mode (CCM) and realize the intermittent on-off mode (DCM) under light and medium loads. By combining the ICC80QSG with CoolMOS™ P7 MOSFET devices, the product improves energy efficiency and reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI). The flyback design also saves on BOM costs because it requires fewer fins and coils. In addition, the integration for burst mode under light load conditions helps achieve extremely low power consumption in standby mode. The ICC80QSG can reduce the output voltage of the gate driver chip in burst mode, and can meet the requirements of extremely low standby loss under light load or no load conditions, thus achieving excellent standby performance in the whole range of work.
The ICC80QSG uses secondary side adjustment (SSR) control, which is an ideal solution for current-controlled battery charging. For greater design flexibility, it provides an adjustable turn-on time comparison table corresponding to the position of the valley bottom switch at a given maximum operating frequency, and an adjustable maximum turn-on time for limiting the input power and current to allow safe operation under low voltage line conditions. The IC provides protection for primary MOSFETs with externally adjustable hysteresis retrospect protection and undervoltage protection. So that it will not overheat even if the use of less heat sink under input pressure conditions. With a full range of protection features, the ICC80QSG enables a simple, safe and powerful AC-DC battery charger design for many applications.
