Infineon introduces the industry's first PFC and hybrid flyback IC

     USB power supply (USB-PD) has become the mainstream standard for fast charging and powering a wide range of mobile and battery-powered devices using a unified Type-C connector. In the newly released USB-PD rev 3.1 standard, the Extended Power Range (EPR) specification supports a wide output voltage range and high power transmission. Unification and high power capacity combined with low system cost have become the main drivers of adapter and charger market development. To accelerate this trend, Infineon Technologies has launched the new XDP digital power supply XDPS2221. This highly integrated integrated controller IC for USB-PD supports high power wide input and output voltage applications with output voltages up to 28V.

     The device integrates an AC-DC power factor correction (PFC) controller and a DC-DC hybrid flyback controller (HFB) (also known as an asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) flyback controller) in a single package to easily meet regulatory requirements by coordinating the operation of the two stages. In addition, reduced external BOM costs and number of components due to further integration of all gate drivers and 600V high voltage start units for initial IC voltage supply, as well as certified active X capacitor discharge circuits.

     Based on the combination of the new zero-voltage switching (ZVS) HFB topology with gallium nitride devices, the product delivers superior efficiency in a variety of line/load conditions. With these features and inherent topological advantages, such as zero-voltage switching and resonant energy transfer for reducing transformer size, systems designed with XDPS2221 can achieve extremely high power densities.

     In addition, the new combination IC synchronizes PFC and HFB burst mode operation for minimum no-load standby input power performance. The enhanced quasi-resonant multi-mode PFCS integrate automatic enable/disable functions and adaptive bus voltage control to maximize average and light load efficiency. Alternatively, you can choose to disable integrated PFC functionality to work with any type of external PFC controller.

     The hybrid flyback stage achieves robust regulation and fast dynamic load response through peak current control operation. To ensure ZVS operation under all conditions, the hybrid flyback stage incorporates the ZVS pulse insertion function, as well as the prevention of body diode cross-on-off in discontinuous on-off mode. The XDPS2221 also provides easy-to-configure parameters through a graphical user interface to optimize system performance.
