Infineon introduces the more powerful USB-C Electronic Marking cable Assembly controller

     Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the EZ-PD™ CMG2, a more powerful USB-C Electronically Labeled Cable Assembly (EMCA) controller. The controller is designed to provide a robust USB-C Power supply (PD) solution for applications such as USB-C, USB4 and Thunderbolt passive cables that support the Extended Power Range (EPR).

     The rapid adoption of USB-C in the industry is mainly due to its ultra-thin design, user-friendly universal connector use experience, and the ability to support multiple data protocols such as USB4, Thunderbolt, and HDMI, which makes it very versatile. In addition, USB-C can support up to 240 W of charging power, a feature that makes it a preferred power connector for a variety of applications.

     To meet the growing demand for reliable end-to-end power and data transmission capabilities in modern mobile devices, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX/OTCQX: IFNNY has introduced a more powerful USB-C Electronically Labeled Cable Assembly (EMCA) controller, the EZ-PD™ CMG2. The controller is designed to provide a robust USB-C Power supply (PD) solution for applications such as USB-C, USB4 and Thunderbolt passive cables that support the Extended Power Range (EPR).

     The USB-C PD controller in Infineon's EZ-PD product family is the industry's most comprehensive USB-C power supply solution. EZ-PD CMG2 (Cable Marker Generation 2) is an EMCA dedicated controller designed for passive non-Thunderbolt cables and Thunderbolt Type-C cables. Supports USB-PD 3.1 and Type-C 2.1 standards. The EZ-PD CMG2-based USB-C EMCA cable supports data transfer rates of USB4 and TBT4 interfaces and charging power up to 240 W (48 V/5 A). The EZ-PD CMG2 integrates features such as VBUS to CC short circuit protection (short circuit overvoltage protection up to 54 V) and VBUS to VCONN short circuit protection (short circuit overvoltage protection up to 54 V). In addition, the controller attenuates RA to reduce power consumption, and integrates oscillator and IEC ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection, so it can operate without an external clock and external ESD.

     The new controller offers a configurable 47 bytes of storage for vendor - and cable-specific configuration data and is capable of operating in the VCONN supply voltage range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V. The CC, VCONN1 and VCONN2 pins support high voltage protection up to 54 V to prevent an accidental short circuit of the high voltage VBUS pins on the Type-C connector, improving safety in use. In addition, the controller is rated to operate in the standard industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, and the CC, VCONN1 and VCONN2 pins are designed with system-level ESD protection to ensure reliability and durability in harsh environments.

     The EZ-PD CMG2 controller is seamlessly compatible with a wide range of USB-C devices and cables. It offers single-chip solutions measuring just 3.3 mm², simplifying design and reducing development time. Thanks to its excellent system reliability and compatibility, manufacturers are able to deliver products that are cost-effective, simple in design, and take up less board area.
