Innovative automotive electronics chip for all new Nissan Skyline models with ProPILOT 2.0 system

     Renesas Electronics announced that Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has adopted Renesas' innovative high-performance automotive electronics technology for its ProPILOT 2.0 intelligent navigation system, with the unveiling of the new Nissan Skyline on July 16, 2019. The driver assistance system combines a navigation system with fully automated driving in a single lane on the highway, using Renesas R-Car automotive system-on-chip (SoC) and RH850 automotive microcontroller (MCU) to enable driving judgment and control in an electronic control unit (ECU).

     ProPILOT 2.0 intelligent navigation technology is used for highway driving, covering the process from on-ramp to off-ramp, and helping the vehicle to follow a preset route on a designated road by working with the vehicle's navigation system. For the first time, this technology enables driving without human intervention in a single lane cruise state.

     To achieve this advanced capability, the Renesas R-Car SoC combines information about nearby vehicles and other objects gathered by cameras and front-facing radar with pre-loaded high-precision 3D map data for navigation to create a detailed map of the vehicle's surroundings. The SoC determines the location of the vehicle based on map data and lane information, and makes a vehicle travel plan based on the information. The RH850 MCU receives the resulting data and sends control commands such as steering wheel, throttle and brake to the ECU. The high-performance processing of the R-Car SoC, combined with the RH850's real-time responsiveness and high reliability, enables judgment and control operations to be performed sequently and accurately, enabling Nissan's ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system.
