
STMicroelectronics has introduced a new 8-bit microcontroller, the STM8L050, to improve the functional integration of low-cost, low-power 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUS). The latest addition to the ultra-energy-efficient STM8L family, the STM8L050 integrates rich analog peripherals with up to six user I/O interfaces, a DMA controller and a separate data EEPROM in a low-cost SO 8 package.
Using the STM8's powerful and energy-efficient 16 MHz processor core, the STM8L050 lives up to expectations, bringing reasonable economy and processing performance to resource-constrained products such as industrial sensors, toys, access cards, e-bike controllers, home automation or lighting products, smart printer cartridges or chargers.
On-chip integrated DMA (Direct Internal Access) controllers can simplify data transfer between peripherals and memory or memory to memory, thereby improving microcontroller processing performance and reducing power consumption. The 256-byte standalone EEPROM stores important program data when the MCU is turned off, while also maximizing the use of flash memory to save program code.
In addition to the two comparators, the STM8L050 has a 4-channel 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a low-power real-time clock (RTC) with programmable alarm and periodic wake up functions, allowing designers to minimize the number of external analog components. In addition, the STM8L050 supports external or internal clocks up to 16MHz, giving designers more flexibility in choosing between performance handling and bill of materials (BOM) costs.
Other features include 8KB of flash memory, 1KB of RAM, two 16-bit timers, one 8-bit timer, and common communication and debugging interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, and SWIM. As a STM8L microcontroller using STMicroelectronics ultra-low power technology, the STM8L050 has a power saving mode with a minimum power consumption of 350nA and a wide operating voltage of 3.6V-1.8V. The whole range of products is rated in the temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, ensuring the stability and reliability of the microcontroller in demanding applications such as industrial control or lighting products.
