KEMET Launches Minimum EMI X2 Film Capacitor Solution for Harsh Environments

     Yageo's KEMET, the world's leading supplier of electronic components, has now launched its latest R53 series of miniature polypropylene film X2 EMI suppressor capacitors. This series meets the growing demand for automotive, industrial, consumer and energy applications that require smaller, X2-class large capacitor solutions to suppress EMI. The R53 series offers capacitance values ranging from 0.1µF to 22µF, lead spacing ranging from 15mm to 37.5mm, 85/85 THB Class IIIB classification, and long life stability in harsh environmental conditions. They are on average 60% smaller than competitive X2-class capacitors, enabling smaller PCB area, lighter weight, lower cost, and higher reliability. These features position the R53 as a pre-eminent X2-class solution that addresses the size, capacitance, and reliability challenges of design engineers across multiple industries.

     The R53 series is currently being marketed with solutions that are either larger in size or require shunt capacitors in their design. The series is rated for 310Vac at 50 or 60Hz and is suitable for class X2 wire-to-wire applications or in series with AC power supplies. The R53 is ideal for high energy density applications such as AC/DC converters in xEV car chargers, smart grid hardware, EMI filtering in variable frequency drives (VFD), LED drivers, and capacitive power supplies. The R53 series features a metallized polypropylene film enclosed in a self-extinguishing resin and a UL 94 V-0 compliant housing. Metallized polypropylene film combined with internal parallel structure has self-recovery properties to prevent catastrophic failure and extend service life.

     Applications that require electronic components to be miniaturized and work in harsh environmental conditions are growing, such as in-car chargers, smart meters, capacitive power supplies, including series connections to mains, motor drives, wind and solar inverters. R53 capacitors are AEC-Q200 compliant and designed for harsh environments to meet the highest reliability standards required for smart grid hardware, which is often located in restricted areas where regular service is not available.
