     They are ideal for automotive applications that require mains power system support during power outages, such as ADAS, autonomous vehicles, and central gateway ECUs. Ultracapacitors are ideal for keeping a real-time clock or volatile memory when the main power system is removed, such as during a power failure or when the main power system battery is removed for replacement. In addition, these ultracapacitors can provide power backup support for applications such as Internet of Things devices, smart meters, medical devices and industrial computing.

 

     Using ultracapacitors in automotive electronics could free them from design constraints imposed by battery life. The benign open-circuit failure mode of ultracapacitors has great advantages over typical battery short-circuit failures that can lead to venting or ignition. In addition, ultracapacitors are a cost-effective alternative to small backup batteries. Depending on the type of load and current demand, ultracapacitors can store enough energy to provide power backup support ranging from a few seconds to several hours.

 

     KEMET Miniature Supercapacitors use a proprietary water-based electrolyte solution to provide high durability and protect against fluid leakage, vibration and thermal shock, resulting in high reliability in harsh environments. Aqueous electrolyte has high conductivity, little impact on the environment, non-toxic and non-flammable. Unlike batteries, ultracapacitors store and release energy quickly through physical adsorption and desorption of ions in the electrolyte between the electrodes. Because of the low internal resistance of supercapacitors, these components can be fully charged in seconds. By contrast, a rechargeable battery can take anywhere from ten minutes to several hours to fully charge. In addition, supercapacitors theoretically have an unlimited life cycle, compared with about 500 cycles for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. They also generally have greater hygroscopic resistance than organic compounds, resulting in a longer service life and better stability.

 

     The supercapacitor introduced by KEMET utilizes advanced water-based technology to improve the electrolyte and realize the first supercapacitor that can withstand 105℃.
