Maxim Integrated Introduces Trinamic Embedded Motion Control Module for Driving High-Power Industrial Motors, Dramatically Reduces Power Consumption

     TRINAMIC Motion Control GmbH & Co. KG, now part of Maxim Integrated Products, Inc., introduces two new slot-based motion control embedded modules and development tools that utilize unique real-time sensorless control technology. These self-contained control/drive modules keep the motor control system's communication traffic low by processing critical functions in real-time on their boards, thereby offloading the system processor. The control technology optimizes the power consumption of industrial motors, reducing wasted power by 50%, enabling it to drive industrial stepper motors and brushless DC (BLDC) motors with 3 times more power (up to 7A).

     Two-phase bipolar stepper motor solution: 5A RMS TMCM-1230 and 6.5A RMS TMCM-1231 are slot-type single-axis controller/driver integrated modules. Each module can power a two-phase bipolar stepper motor and has the same form factor and pinout for easy replacement. Both modules use Trinamic's unique sensorless control technology to detect the power requirements of the motor in real time to adjust the current on the fly, reducing power consumption by at least 50% compared to competing solutions.

     Field Oriented Control Solutions: Trinamic also offers 5A RMS TMCM-1637 and 7A RMS TMCM-1638 slotted field oriented controller/driver modules that add Hall or ABN coding capability to field oriented control (or vector control). These modules support single-phase direct current (DC) motors, two-phase bipolar stepper motors, and three-phase BLDC motors.

     Free Integrated Development Environment (IDE): To quickly evaluate system performance and speed time-to-market, engineers can take advantage of the free IDE software provided by Trinamic in conjunction with the single-axis TMCM-BB1 or TMCM-BB1 controlled by the TMCM-0930-TMCL microcontroller module. 4-axis TMCM-BB4 motherboard for system evaluation.
