Maxim Integrated Releases AI System Power Supply Chipset with Highest Efficiency and Smallest Scheme Size

     Maxim Integrated Products, Inc introduced the MAX16602 dual output regulated power supply for AI processor core power supply and the MAX20790 intelligent power level IC to help developers of high-performance, high-power artificial intelligence (AI) systems achieve the design goals of maximum efficiency (reducing energy consumption costs and heat generation) and minimum solution size. The AI multi-phase power supply chipset makes full use of the patented technology of Maxim Integrated coupling inductor to suppress the current ripple, and improves the efficiency by 1% compared with the competitive scheme; Under 1.8V output voltage and 200A load, the efficiency is higher than 95%.

 

     In addition, the efficiency improvement reduced energy waste by 16%. Compared with the competitive scheme, the size of the chipset output capacitor is reduced by 40%, effectively reducing the overall scheme size and the number of capacitors. The chipset provides tailorable schemes for users to customize to meet the requirements of different output currents and sizes. In addition, chipsets are suitable for power supply design of systems such as AI edge computing and data center cloud computing.

 


     In order to meet the rapidly growing demand for AI applications and in-depth learning, engineers committed to the development of large-scale data centers need to constantly improve the system computing capacity, and also deal with many challenges such as the increasing peak power and the resulting heating problems. Compared with the competitive solutions, the use of MAX16602 and MAX20790 polyphase chipsets can significantly reduce the heat generation of the AI system. Thanks to Maxim Integrated's patented coupling inductor technology and single chip dual side cooling power level IC design, the switching frequency can be reduced by 50%, thus reducing power loss. The single chip integration solution eliminates the parasitic resistance and inductance between the FET and the driver, thus achieving the highest efficiency in the industry.

 


     While designers seek to enhance the performance of AI, space constraints also pose great challenges. The power chipset provides users with the smallest overall solution size, allowing developers to reduce the number of components and reduce bill of materials (BOM) costs. In addition, compared with the competitive solution using discrete inductors, Maxim Integrated's thin coupled inductor design allows each phase to support higher saturation current, which helps reduce the number of working phases of the power supply, help designers overcome space constraints, and reduce the overall cost.
