Article Cover
Maxim Integrated announced the DS28E18 1-Wire to I2C/SPI bridge chip for extending remote sensor network connectivity, helping designers reduce system design complexity and cost to the lowest level in the industry. Using Maxim Integrated's 1-Wire protocol to connect the I2C and SPI-compatible sensors, the DS28E18 requires only two wires to connect the device, while competing solutions require four wires to connect the I2C or six wires to connect the SPI, significantly reducing system complexity.

In industrial and remote monitoring applications, most designs connect remote sensors via a serial interface. When the transmission distance reaches 100 meters, in order to connect the remote sensor, the mainstream serial protocol will require up to 5 external switches and expansion devices, greatly increasing the design cost and complexity. In addition, today's widely adopted serial interfaces typically require six cables to connect the remote sensor to the main controller.

The DS28E18 can support power supply and data transmission on the same cable, using Maxim Integrated's 1-Wire protocol to connect I2C or SPI peripherals up to 100 meters with only two wires. The solution eliminates up to five extenders and switching ics, greatly reducing connection costs and software development complexity. In addition, building a 10 - to 20-node network takes up only one programmable I/O port on the host controller.
