Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announced the launch of Arcminaxis™, a breakthrough magnetic technology designed to meet the growing demand for affordable and high-precision robotic joint position sensing solutions. The MLX90384, the first product with Arcminaxis™ technology, provides manufacturers with a cost-effective solution by simplifying the assembly process of robotic joints. The product comes with magnets and software packages that support calibration and efficient operation, providing simplicity and economy of design.
In the past robot design scheme, manufacturers often give priority to the top-performing sensor chip, and the cost factor is relatively insufficient. However, as the application of robots continues to expand, manufacturers are increasingly focused on improving production efficiency while reducing costs, which makes them more careful in the selection of components to ensure the economy and simplicity of design, while maintaining the high reliability of the robot and precise repeatability of motion.
The MLX90384, the first in the Arcminaxis™ series, successfully combines superior performance with extreme economy to find the ideal balance between high performance but expensive optical solutions and low cost but less effective dipole magnetic solutions to address these challenges.
The core benefits of the MLX90384 are its innovative magnet design and superior sensing capabilities. Unlike conventional multipole magnet sensor chips, the MLX90384 breaks the limitation that the magnetic pole size must be strictly matched to the sensor chip. This feature makes it possible to use larger, more powerful magnets, which can output stronger signals and support larger operating gaps. More importantly, the same sensor chip can flexibly match magnets of different sizes. As a result, Arcminaxis™ technology integrates the following unique and critical performance combinations: up to 18-bit resolution, ±0.5mm loose magnet and sensor chip placement tolerances, Up to 18-bit resolution, ±0.5mm loose magnet and sensor chip placement tolerances, and a nominal 1.5mm magnet to chip spacing.
In the field of robot design, the MLX90384 uses its functional advantages to effectively reduce the cost of sensor chips and magnets. Compared to existing multipolar solutions, the MLX90384 is not only a more convenient design and assembly process, but also stands out for its greater assembly tolerances and greater resistance to mechanical wear.
The MLX90384 is packaged in TSSOP-16 and comes with a package of magnets, operating system and calibration tools. In addition, Millicore's Arcminaxis™ technology further enhances design flexibility by supporting applications such as off-axis, through-axis and linear encoders.
