Melexis introduced multi-channel LIN RGB LED controller to improve the level of automotive ambient lighting technology to a new height

     Melexis further promotes creative dynamic automotive lighting design with the launch of MLX81118, a multi-channel LIN RGB LED controller chip with 24-channel LED driver output. The MLX81118 can drive 8 RGB channels, reducing bill of material costs while simplifying the design of front lighting inside and outside the vehicle. In addition, MLX81118 also adds dual input voltage capability, which can significantly reduce LED power consumption for LIN applications.

     Melexis further extends this product line with the launch of MLX81118, a multi-channel LIN RGB LED controller chip for in-car ambient light lighting and dynamic lighting applications in the LIN ecosystem. The MLX81118 has 24 outputs (each providing up to 60mA of current) and can drive eight RGB channels. Independent PWM control and up to 16 bit resolution configuration enable the controller to achieve any color point and brightness.

     MLX81118 is a powerful complement to Melexis MLX81115 and MLX81113 to address a wide range of application needs. MLX81113 is primarily used for traditional in-car ambiance lighting functions, while MLX81118 is widely applicable to applications that require multiple RGB leds to be controlled from a single LIN node within one or more modules, such as door trim or dashboard applications. Multi-channel support means MLX81118 is also suitable for dynamic lighting effects achieved through LIN control.

     In addition to reducing the bill of materials and simplifying the design of the multi-channel interior and exterior lighting system, the MLX81118 also reduces LED power consumption thanks to the addition of dual input voltage capability, which optimizes the driving voltage connected to the leds. This simplifies thermal management, improves module reliability, and reduces power consumption.

     Built-in direct and indirect temperature monitoring allows for temperature compensation in all channels to ensure stable color spots over the entire temperature operating range from -40 ° C to 125 ° C.

     The newly launched MLX81118 is based on Melexis LIN RGB LED controller with proven features and a complete LIN system including transceiver and protocol processor for connecting the LED module to the vehicle's LIN network. The LIN interface complies with LIN2.x, SAE J2602 and ISO 18987 standards, and supports automatic addressing according to bus parallel mode.

     LED control is handled by Melexis MLX16 FX 16 bit RISC microcontroller and on-chip memory subsystem, which is equipped with 2KB RAM and 32KB flash memory (for storing applications and LED calibration coefficients) and real EEPROM (for storing additional customer data). In addition, MLX81118 meets the requirements of ISO 26262 and can meet the use of functional safety systems.

     MLX81118 is manufactured with advanced silicon on insulator (SOI) technology. It has high voltage I/O, can work at power supply voltage as low as 4V, and can maintain stable performance in case of vehicle power supply voltage fluctuation (such as stop start operation). Built in protection functions include 28V jump start, and battery overvoltage and undervoltage detection.

     This product has a complete tool chain, including evaluation boards, online emulators and C compiler packages, to help accelerate application development. It also provides basic software including LIN driver, color mixing, math library and IC initialization routine.
