Melexis introduces Hall Effect current sensors with enhanced performance and diagnostic capabilities

Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, has announced the introduction of two new current sensing ics, the MLX91217 and MLX91216, building on more than 20 years of experience in Hall effect technology. Both new sensors feature the same high-performance CMOS core: the MLX91217 uses traditional Hall effect technology, while the MLX91216 uses Melexis' proprietary IMC technology.

     Melexis has announced the introduction of two new current sensing ics, the MLX91217 and the MLX91216, building on more than 20 years of experience in Hall effect technology. Both new sensors feature the same high-performance CMOS core: the MLX91217 uses traditional Hall effect technology, while the MLX91216 uses Melexis' proprietary IMC technology.

 

     Both devices are targeted at automotive applications, particularly inverter phase current monitoring and DC link monitoring, where Hall effect technology has been the solution of choice for more than a decade. In addition to traction motor control, both devices are suitable for other embedded applications such as DCDC converters and battery junction boxes, as well as any application requiring high speed, fast response or high precision (over) current measurement.

 

     Thanks to a new CMOS core and factory calibration, the new product has improved thermal sensitivity drift (33%) and thermal zero drift (50%) compared to the previous generation. The new product also introduces more on-chip filtering and line break detection functions. The line break detection function indicates the fault in the power distribution. With on-chip filtering, a trade-off between resolution and response time and sensor bandwidth can be made to improve signal-to-noise characteristics.

 

     The MLX91217 comes in a slim VA (SIP-4) package for easy integration into traditional Hall effect measurement rings. The compact through-hole package supports a variety of lead adjustments and routing methods, making it compatible with PCBS using SMD technology. The MLX91216 comes in a traditional SOIC-8 package and is suitable for SMD mounting. The device uses IMC technology, which simplifies current measurement and eliminates the need for external magnetic collectors-making assembly easier, while reducing size, weight and cost. Both devices are AEC-Q100 Level 0 certified for automotive applications and operate in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +150°C.

These devices are ideal for challenging applications in the rapidly evolving modern automotive electrification market."
