Melexis introduces new smart shunt solutions

     Melexis has announced the introduction of its new smart shunt current sensor MLX91231, expanding its range of automotive current sensors with the addition of shunt resistive solutions. The MLX91231 is a high-precision IVT (Current, Voltage and temperature) device that combines the intelligence and flexibility of a digital microcontroller unit (MCU) to fully meet functional safety requirements. The MLX91231 is tailored for applications such as DC/DC converters, battery terminal sensors, low and high voltage distribution, and circuit breakers.

     With the continuous improvement of vehicle intelligence, more and more cars have added advanced driver assistance system functions, and the normal operation of these functions are dependent on low voltage. As a result, there is a growing demand for high-performance, safe and reliable current and voltage sensors.

     The MLX91231 provides excellent accuracy and has a sensitivity drift amplitude error of less than ±0.25% over the temperature and service life range, and an input introduction drift error of only 1.5μV under the same conditions. The device enables more accurate monitoring and better optimizes power distribution and monitoring in low-voltage systems such as DC/DC converters, battery terminal sensors (BTS), and regional infrastructure. The MLX91231 also exhibits excellent output stability and electromagnetic compatibility, making it an ideal deployment choice in demanding automotive environments.

     As an MCU integrated IVT sensor, the MLX91231 not only performs current measurement, but also provides other advanced functions. The IVT sensor can be powered either from a 5V regulator or directly from a 12V battery and provides current, voltage and junction temperature readings via an optional LIN or UART output. An important feature of the MCU is its built-in overcurrent detection (OCD) for diagnostics, which safely and simply triggers Pyro-Fuse without the need to develop complex security mechanisms. The MLX91231 complies with ISO 26262 ASIL B (D) requirements and supports ASIL D system integration.

     The custom software design of the MLX91231 is consistent with existing and future Melexis solutions. Melexis offers a familiar platform solution that supports software reuse, while also offering dedicated solutions that simplify development time and reduce costs. In addition, the MLX91231 features a compact 8-pin SOIC package that simplifies the process of system integration.
