Microchip Launches the Industry's First System on Chip FPGA Based on RISC-V

Microchip Technology Inc. announced that the MPFS250T and the previously released MPFS025T are ready for mass production. Microchip also announced that its Mi-V ecosystem will continue to streamline RISC-V adoption to support a new class of smaller, lower power and cost industrial, Internet of Things and other edge computing products.

    The industry's first SoC field programmable gate array (FPGA) supporting royalty free RISC-V open instruction set architecture (ISA) began mass production, ushering in an important milestone in the development of embedded processors. As customers continue to rapidly adopt PolarFire SoC FPGAs, Microchip Technology Inc. announced that MPFS250T and MPFS025T previously released have met the requirements for mass production. Microchip also announced that its Mi-V ecosystem will continue to simplify the adoption of RISC-V to support a new class of industrial, Internet of Things and other edge computing products with smaller size, lower power consumption and lower cost.

 

     Shakeel Peera, Vice President of Marketing of Microchip FPGA Business Unit, said: "Now a large number of customers use our Mi-V tools and solution kits to design in the PolarFire SoC series. They have developed innovative products, brought the industry's first-class solutions to the market, with excellent heat dissipation and power consumption performance, and achieved unprecedented computing power in small sizes. With the introduction of SoC PolarFire devices with mass production conditions, we are writing a new chapter in the history of RISC-V."

 

     PolarFire SoC FPGA adopts the enhanced real-time and Linux supported fast FPGA architecture The RISC-V based microprocessor subsystem, supported by Microchip's commitment to product roadmap and long-term availability, unlocked a new configurable processing mode. Compared with other processing schemes, the customized function implemented by the open standard RISC-V ISA not only improves power efficiency, security and reliability, but also has many valuable new functions built in, such as deterministic asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) mode, which allows users to run real-time applications with the highest performance under the Linux operating system. The innovation of PolarFire SoC provides new solutions to the challenges of improving computing efficiency and providing computing acceleration at the edge of the network, providing unparalleled functionality for communications, defense, medical and industrial automation applications.

 

     Mi-V ecosystem is also important for the adoption of RISC-V, covering various IP, hardware, operating systems, middleware, debuggers, compilers and design services. More than 20 partners are working with Microchip to expand this low-cost evaluation platform and accelerate the design and deployment of all industries. It eliminates barriers to entry and enables embedded engineers, software designers and hardware developers to take advantage of the combined advantages of RISC-V ISA and PolarFire SoC FPGA in small size, low heat and low power consumption.
