     Over the past few years, Chinese telecom operators have been vigorously deploying 100G OTN switching networks. China Mobile, one of the c ountry's largest operators, is preparing to launch a new network to support government/enterprise dedicated services. To this end, China Mobile will significantly adjust the OTN connection bandwidth according to international standards. As the only commercial chip and software vendor that supports the ODUflex Bandwidth Lossless Tuning (HAO) specification, Microchip Technology Inc., through its subsidiary Microsemi, has released a benchmarking solution based on Microchip's DIGI OTN family of processors. This series of processors played a key role in China Mobile's testing of the interoperability of products from multiple suppliers. China Mobile is now capable of launching the world's first on-demand dedicated bandwidth service. As work continues to move to the cloud, government and enterprise customers can use the service to flexibly and in real time adjust their network bandwidth needs.

 

     With Microchip's DIGI OTN family of processors, operators can extend OTN from their metropolitan area network to the access layer to provide dedicated lines and other bandwidth-assured high-availability services to government, enterprise, and data center customers. Each generation of DIGI OTN processors is integrated with HAO capabilities to ensure that operators can provide customers with the bandwidth they need, when they need it. Without HAO, the end-to-end connection bandwidth used to provide these services would be fixed, and to change the bandwidth, you would have to disconnect and interrupt the transmission. With the help of several vendors whose OTN devices are proven to be interoperable, China Mobile used the DIGI OTN processor to verify that the technology and software could support the large-scale deployment of on-demand bandwidth services.

 

     Li Yunbo, Project manager, China Mobile Research Institute, said: "China Mobile has deployed the on-demand bandwidth allocation function in the newly built government/enterprise OTN network to take advantage of the advantages of flexible bandwidth and services. China Mobile is the first operator in the world to implement HAO Connectivity requirements and test specifications. We are currently deploying HAO technology on a large scale and preparing to incorporate the technology into China Mobile's new production network business. "We are pleased to have made significant progress on this work by partnering with Microchip and the device vendor ecosystem."

 

     Babak Samimi, vice president of Microchip's communications business group, said: "Large-scale deployment of on-demand bandwidth services supported by a flexible OTN switching network requires interoperability testing. China Mobile is the first operator in the world to complete the test. We admire this, and we are proud that Microchip DIGI OTN processors can play a key role in verifying the viability of the industry ecosystem. We believe this technology will accelerate in China and globally, enabling operators to provide innovative services and open up new revenue streams based on the real-time business needs of enterprise customers."

 

     Microchip assisted in the development of the HAO specification, which is now incorporated into the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G.7044 standard. To support the HAO technology, Microchip has released a software development Kit (SDK) for its DIGI-120G, DIGI-G4, and the latest DIGI-G5 OTN processors.
