Mission-critical networks and other critical enterprise infrastructure need to constantly receive accurate time information from network time servers in order to operate reliably. But these servers are vulnerable to cybersecurity threats such as Global Positioning System (GPS) jamming and spoofing. Microchip Technology has introduced a solution to solve this problem by integrating its BlueSky technology signal anomaly detection software into the SyncServer S600 series network time servers and instruments.
Microchip is the first company to fully integrate GPS interference and spoofing detection and protection as well as local radio frequency (RF) data logging and analysis within a single time server. The SyncServer S600 Series Stratum 1 instrument works in conjunction with BlueSky technology-based intelligent interference and spoofing detectors to continuously monitor the local GPS satellite constellation while checking the integrity of GPS and local RF signals to ensure effectiveness.
If an anomaly is detected, the solution sends an alert and, if necessary, switches the SyncServer instrument to an alternate time source or internal oscillator, protecting continuous timing output while ensuring that timing attenuation in critical network and business operations remains minimal and predictable. The newly launched solutions can be widely used in key industries such as banking and equity trading, power utilities, aerospace and defense.
SyncServer BlueSky technology provides continuous detection and protection against GPS interference and spoofing, including a complete set of logging, mapping, and measurement tools for describing local GPS satellite signals and local RF events over time. This helps to correlate, troubleshoot, and identify and correct local anomalies, some of which may be related to RF signal broadcasting in consumer electronics or nearby. The solution is available (optional) through the SyncServer v4.1 software version, which provides selected features from Microchip's proven BlueSky GNSS firewall solution for use in third-party GPS receivers and critical infrastructure in general.
