To reduce the time, cost, and risk of developing spacecraft systems, designers can use commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) in the initial phase and then replace them with space-grade equivalent radiation-resistant devices with the same pin distribution in plastic or ceramic packages. Microchip Technology announced the launch of a radiation-resistant 64 megabit (Mbit) parallel interface SuperFlash Flash Flash device with superior total ionization dose (TID) tolerance for maximum reliability and durability in the harsh space radiation environment. The new products are ideal accessories for Microchip's microcontrollers (MCUS), microprocessors (MPUs), and field programmable gate arrays (FPgas) for aerospace systems, providing the building blocks for this scalable development model
Bob Vampola, vice president of Microchip's Aerospace and Defense business unit, said: "The SST38LF6401RT SuperFlash product further enhances scalability in the development of total solutions for aerospace systems using our radiation-resistant or radiation-resistant microprocessors and FPGas, which require complementary flash memory to store the critical software code or bitstream that drives the entire system. The reliability requirements for digital processing are very high, and the new products provide critical protection for this process."
The SST38LF6401RT device has a radiation tolerance of up to 50 thousand rads (Krad) TID even when the flash memory is still powered and running, which enables the system to operate in a variety of space applications. In these applications, the system cannot afford any code execution errors that could lead to serious defects and system crashes. The new products are ideal for Microchip's SAMRH71 Arm® Cortex-M7 based radiation-resistant SoC processors and can also be used with RT PolarFire® FPGas to support reconfiguration of spacecraft onboard systems. The new product has a pin distribution compatible with its industrial version for easy replacement with an aerospace grade plastic or ceramic package version on a printed circuit board (PCB). The SST38LF6401RT operates in a voltage range of 3.0 to 3.6 volts (V).
