
As automation and networking capabilities become increasingly prevalent throughout the automotive and industrial markets, the need to accurately measure dynamic currents in high-frequency noise environments often plies modern automotive and factory applications. To address electronic noise environments and meet the need for more accurate current measurement, Microchip Technology has introduced an AEC-Q100 zero-level standard upper end current detection amplifier with the industry's lowest offset voltage.
The MCP6C02 amplifier is AEC-Q100 certified and is available in a 1-stage 6-pin SOT-23 package and a zero-stage 8-pin 3x3 VDFN package. The maximum offset error in the VDFN package is only 12 µV, with the lowest offset voltage among the zero-stage upper current detection amplifiers. The amplifier has a specified temperature range of -40 °C to +150 °C, and its market-leading offset error allows the use of a small shunt resistance while maintaining a high measurement resolution. This provides a more accurate and energy efficient current measurement solution for applications that are exposed to extreme temperatures, such as motors in automotive pumps. In addition, the VDFN package uses a wettable side plating process that allows visual inspection of the solder joint without the need for X-ray scanning as in traditional DFN packages.
Microchip's MCP6C02 and MCP6C04 devices also feature on-chip electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters and zero-drift architectures. EMI filters provide additional protection against high-frequency electrical interference, such as wireless hot spots and radio frequencies, while self-correcting architectures improve the accuracy of current measurements. These capabilities allow developers to create higher performance solutions in a variety of applications, such as creating current-control feedback loops for power supplies or motors, for monitoring and charging batteries, or for monitoring current levels for safety reasons.

Microchip's new ADM01104 evaluation board supports both MCP6C02 and MCP6C04 upper end current detection amplifiers and is compatible with both devices (pin, package, and functionality). To avoid being affected by high voltages and currents, the evaluation board is pre-installed and equipped with a number of mechanisms to provide appropriate filtering and protection for the input pins. It also provides multiple reference voltage options to quickly evaluate the unidirectional and bidirectional operating modes of the device.
