Microchip introduces two USB-PD solutions

     USB Type-C has become more widely used, and with the introduction of Power Delivery (PD), it is now possible to charge more types of devices at faster charging speeds than ever before. In the traditional way, the implementation of USB Type-C applications is very complex and expensive. Microchip Technology has introduced two new solutions to simplify the design of USB Type-C PD in a variety of applications.

     As one of the first USB 3.1 SmartHub products in the industry to pass the USB-IF certification, the USB705x series supports Power Delivery (TID1212), which enables fast charging of devices. And introduce a unique PD implementation named Hostflexing and PDBalancing. Another new product, the UPD301A, is a standalone USB Type-C PD controller that greatly simplifies the implementation of basic USB Type-C PD charging functions and is ideal for charging applications such as car backseats, portable devices, and public charging stations.

     The USB705x series carries two unique features - HostFlexing and PDBalancing - that simplify the implementation of USB Type-C PD. HostFlexing allows all USB Type-C ports in the docking station to act as "notebook" ports without the need for labels to explain the overall functionality of each USB Type-C port, simplifying the development experience. PDBalancing provides manufacturers with a way to manage the overall system power supply through centralized control, which can charge multiple PD-enabled devices at a lower total power, ultimately helping users reduce costs.

     To meet consumer demand for fast charging and data transfer on mobile devices, the USB705x series combines native support for USB Type-C PD with the ultra-high data rate of 5 Gbps of USB 3.1. The new family, which includes models such as the USB7050, USB7051, USB7052 and USB7056, offers a range of USB configurations to meet different PD and USB Type-C design needs and is ideal for docking stations, PC displays and automotive infotainment systems. For example, the USB7050 offers three uplink and downlink USB Type-C ports that support PD, while the USB7056 offers only one uplink port and five traditional Type-A downlink ports. The new hub also supports driver assistance applications on all handheld mobile devices, allowing the phone's graphical user interface to be displayed on the vehicle screen while charging the mobile device.

     As more and more smartphone charging requirements exceed the BC 1.2 charging standard, electronic system designers need to be able to easily implement basic high-power charging functions in the system. The UPD301A provides a simple standalone solution for USB Type-C PD charging in a variety of applications. The new device supports single-port and dual-port operation, which can be achieved by changing the configuration of the pins. The UPD301 complements Microchip's extensive USB hub portfolio with solutions covering charging, full data, video, and power management.
