Microchip launched SAM9X60D1G-SOM, expanding the MPU based system level module product portfolio

Microchip Technology has expanded its portfolio of microprocessor system modules (SOM) by announcing the launch of ARM926EJ-S™ -based SAM9X60D1G-SOM embedded microprocessors running at up to 600 MHz. Software for SAM9X60D1G-SOM is available with bare metal or RTOS support through MPLAB Harmony 3, as well as full mainline Linux distribution support.

     With the continuous and rapid growth and development of the embedded market, developers are trying to optimize product development, otherwise they may need to transform from MCU to MPU to meet higher processing requirements. In order to help developers complete this transformation and reduce design complexity, Microchip Technology Inc. announced the introduction of SAM9X60D1G-SOM embedded microprocessor based on ARM926EJ-S with a running speed of up to 600 MHz, further expanding its microprocessor system module (SOM) product portfolio. Software for SAM9X60D1G-SOM can be used through MPLAB ®  Harmony 3 provides bare metal or RTOS support, as well as full Linux  Mainline release support.

 

     The new SOM is based on SAM9X60D1G Packaging System (SiP), which is 28 mm × 28 mm small hand welded module, including MPU and DDR in a single package, as well as power supply, clock and memory. SAM9X60D1G-SOM is the first SOM equipped with 4 Gb SLC NAND flash memory in Microchip, which can maximize the storage of data in application devices, while on-board DDR reduces the supply and price risks related to storage chips. The small size SAM9X60D1G-SOM also includes a MCP16,501 power management IC (PMIC), which simplifies the power design work to a single 5V voltage rail, enabling the system to achieve lower power consumption.


     In order to provide the functions that may be required by the Ethernet connection system, the SAM9X60D1G-SOM includes a 10/100 KSZ8081 Ethernet PHY and a 1 Kb serial EEPROM with a preprogrammed MAC address (EUI-48). Customers can further customize the design according to the required security protection level, such as secure boot with on chip security key storage (OTP), hardware encryption engine (TDES, AES and SHA) and true random generator (TRNG).


     Rod Drake, Vice President of Microchip's 32-bit MPU Business Department, said: "With SAM9X60D1G-SOM, designers can take advantage of medium performance microprocessors and greatly reduce the design complexity. This latest SOM provides customers with a small size solution directly from Microchip, reducing the logistics burden of purchasing six active components and many passive components on the SOM separately."
SAM9X60D1G-SOM is the latest SOM product based on MPU. It uses a set of universal and proven microchip components to reduce design complexity and overall PCB cost. For example, since complex devices have been wired on the SOM, customers can use low-cost four layer PCBs to design products.


     This SOM and components are applicable to Microchip's customer driven product shutdown mechanism, that is, to continue to supply products as long as possible in the case of product demand. This is particularly important in today's semiconductor environment where demand is strong and supply is tight.


     SAM9X60D1G-SOM is specially designed for many MPU32 terminal applications involving various industries, such as medical equipment, automotive telematics and infotainment systems, electric vehicle charging equipment, industrial and automation control, etc. It is also particularly suitable for products designed to provide computing power with multiple communication interfaces. These interfaces can be customized for different projects after a certification.
